It also sheds light on the rise of Zurich as a financial centre, the foundation of the SNB, and the consequences of these developments for Zurich’s downtown cityscape.

One essay places the structure typologically in the tradition of bank buildings from the Middle Ages to the present day, while another considers the work of Gebrüder Pfister, so ubiquitous and prominent a feature of Zurich’s urban fabric, in the international architectural context.

Abundantly illustrated with historical images, plans and other archival material, the volume also features up-to-date photographs in its tribute to a public architecture that unites monumentality with pragmatism and restraint.

The book will be available in bookstores in German and English versions as of 30 September 2022.

Beginning today, the SNB Forum at Fraumünsterstrasse 8 in Zurich presents excerpts in an interactive multimedia display. In addition, photographs included in the publication will also be on view in the Forum’s windows.
