Compared with the previous month, real, seasonally adjusted retail trade turnover registered an increase of 1.1%. Retail sector excluding service stations Adjusted for sales days and holidays, the retail sector excluding service stations showed a 1.4% decrease in nominal turnover in May 2022 compared with May 2021 (in real terms –2.7%). Retail sales of food, drinks and tobacco registered a decline in nominal turnover of 5.3% (in real terms –6.5%), whereas the non-food sector registered a nominal plus of 2.4% (in real terms +0.8%). |

Excluding service stations, the retail sector showed a seasonally adjusted increase in nominal turnover of 1.4% compared with the previous month (in real terms +0.9%). Retail sales of food, drinks and tobacco registered a plus of 0.6% (in real terms 0.0%). The non-food sector showed a plus of 2.5% (in real terms +1.9%).

The COVID-19 crisis continued to have a major impact on the tourism sector in 2021. After the shock of 2020, there was still no return to the pre-pandemic situation. The number of people travelling remained well below 2019 levels. Increase in the number of hours worked in Switzerland in 2021

The total number of hours worked in Switzerland reached 7.798 billion in 2021, representing an increase of 2.5% compared with the previous year. The pre-pandemic level has not yet been regained, however. According to the latest results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), the volume of work among 20-64 year olds in Switzerland increased slightly more than in the EU.

75 percent of Swiss citizens living abroad have more than one nationality

07.04.2022 – At the end of 2021, more than one in ten Swiss citizens lived abroad. This was a 1.5% increase compared with 2020. Most of these citizens lived in Europe. Regardless of the continent in which they lived, the majority were aged between 18 and 64. Reflecting Switzerland’s multicultural nature, many of them also had more than one nationality, according to the results of the statistics on the Swiss abroad from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

This sharp increase can partly be explained by the low figure for February 2021, when COVID-19 protective measures were reintroduced.
