Romeo Lacher is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Julius Baer Group Ltd. and Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. Christoph Mäder is President of economiesuisse. The election of these new members is necessary to replace Olivier Steimer and Heinz Karrer, who will both be leaving the Bank Council at the end of April 2021. At its meeting today, the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank decided to propose to the General Meeting of Shareholders of 30 April 2021 that Romeo Lacher and Christoph Mäder be elected to the SNB Bank Council for the remainder of the 2020–2024 term of office. Romeo Lacher is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Julius Baer Group Ltd. and Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. Christoph Mäder is President of economiesuisse. The election of these new members is necessary to replace Olivier Steimer and Heinz Karrer, who will both be leaving the Bank Council at the end of April 2021. Mr Steimer, former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banque Cantonale Vaudoise, will be stepping down due to the statutory limit on the maximum term of office, and Mr Karrer, until recently President of economiesuisse, owing to his having left that position. Mr Steimer was elected to the Bank Council in 2009 and provided valuable service in particular as its Vice President and as Head of the Compensation Committee. Mr Karrer was elected to the Bank Council in 2014 and made important contributions as a Member of the Audit Committee. The SNB would like to take this opportunity to thank Olivier Steimer and Heinz Karrer for their considerable commitment and wish them all the best for the future.

In the second quarter of 2020, the current account surplus amounted to CHF 10 billion; in the same quarter of 2019 it was CHF 21 billion. This decline was principally due to lower receipts from direct investment abroad. While the goods trade balance and the services trade balance changed only marginally, there was a significant decrease in receipts and expenses.
