Tourist Accommodation in the Winter Season 2016/2017: Overnight stays Increased by 2.0 percent in Switzerland

Neuchâtel, 06.06.2017 (FSO) – The hotel sector registered 15.7 million overnight stays in Switzerland during the winter tourist season (from November 2016 to April 2017). This represents an increase of 2.0% (+314,000 overnight stays) compared with the same period a year earlier. With a total of 8.2 million overnight stays, foreign demand rose by 2.1% (+171,000). Domestic visitors registered a 1.9% increase (+143,000) with 7.5 million units. Neuchâtel, 06.06.2017 (FSO) – The hotel sector registered 15.7 million overnight stays in Switzerland during the winter tourist season (from November 2016 to April 2017). This represents an increase of 2.0% (+314,000 overnight stays) compared with the same period a year earlier. With a total of 8.2 million overnight stays, foreign demand rose by 2.1% (+171,000). Domestic visitors registered a 1.9% increase (+143,000) with 7.5 million units. These are the provisional results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO)

In the winter season, only the months of December and February recorded a drop in the number of overnight stays (-0.8% and -1.5%, respectively). The months of November (+ 0.6%) and January (+ 5.2%) recorded a rise. For a meaningful comparison of the figures, the effects of Easter are to be canceled by considering the months March and April together. The two months together recorded a positive overnight rate of 4.3 percent.

Rise in domestic demand, reverse in trend for Asian demand

In the tourist season, Swiss guests generated an increase of 143,000 overnight stays (+ 1.9%) compared to the same period of the previous year.

The foreign guests recorded an additional 171,000 overnight stays (+ 2.1%). This increase is attributable primarily to Asian guests, which recorded an increase of 132,000 units (+ 9.6%). Among the Asian countries, the Republic of Korea registered an increase of 29,000 overnight stays (+ 26.4%), China (excluding Hong Kong) an increase of 28,000 units (+ 7.6%) and India an increase of 22,000 Units (+ 17.5%).

The American continent also registered an increase in demand (+ 69,000 / + 7.9%). The United States of America recorded the strongest absolute increase in all foreign countries of origin, with an increase of 42,000 overnight stays (+ 7.0%).

Mixed results within the tourist regions

Demand from Europe (excluding Switzerland) fell by 17,000 units (-0.3%). The United Kingdom registered the clearest absolute decline in all countries of origin with a drop of 38,000 overnight stays (-4.7%). This is followed by Italy (-27,000 / -5.8%), Germany (-22,000 / -1.3%) and France (-12,000 / -2.0%). The guests from Belgium, on the other hand, generated an increase of 35,000 overnight stays (+ 13.7%).

The continent of Oceania recorded an increase in overnight stays (+8300 / + 7.5%), while the number of overnight guests fell from the African continent (-21,000 / -14.8%).

The number of overnight stays is increasing in the majority of tourism regions

Nine of the thirteen tourism regions registered an increase in overnight stays in the tourist season of winter compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. With an increase of 66,000 overnight stays (+ 3.6%), the Berne region showed the largest absolute increase. The Wallis region (+ 59,000 overnight stays / + 3.1%), the Ticino (+ 53,000 / + 8.7%), the Zurich region (+ 50,000 / + 2.1%) and graubünden (+ 49,000 / + 1.9%). On the other hand, Eastern Switzerland (-13,000 / -1.7%) recorded the strongest absolute decline, followed by the Aargau region (-11,000 / -3.3%).
