In 2015, Swiss GDP grew at 1.2% year-on-year and was thus lower than in 2014 (+ 2.4%). Depending on the economic sector, however, the development is very different. The wholesale, insurance and healthcare sectors were the drivers of national economic growth in 2015. By contrast, the banking sector and a large part of the manufacturing industry, which suffered from the impact of the lifting of the EUR / CHF minimum exchange rate, faced difficulties.
Regional growth in Switzerland is mixed

The differences in cantonal economic growth reflect the heterogeneity of economic structures: some cantons are focused on the secondary sector, others mainly on services.

While Neuchâtel (+ 4.4%) and Schaffhausen (+ 2.9%) benefit in particular from good manufacturing activity, growth in Canton Schwyz (+ 2.9%) is driven by all economic sectors except agriculture. The driving force in the canton of Zug (+ 2.8%) is the wholesale trade and other services, in particular computer science.

Conversely, the economies of the cantons of Aargau (-0.5%), Geneva (-0.9%), Graubünden (-1%) and the Jura (-1%) saw a downturn. The negative development in the cantons of Aargau, Geneva and Jura is due to the unfavorable national economic situation for the manufacturing and financial sectors. Grisons industry experienced a slowdown or stagnation in all sectors of the economy. In all these cantons, the decline also has an impact on employment dynamics, in the cantons of Aargau, Geneva and Jura in specific areas, in the canton of Graubünden to a greater extent.
Zurich continues to contribute the most to overall Swiss growth

As in previous years, the canton of Zurich made the largest contribution to growth in the whole of Switzerland (0.5%) and thus plays a key role in the Swiss economy. Zurich recorded a positive development in all sectors (except agriculture), demonstrating continued dynamism and stability.
