Switzerland Unemployment in January 2021: risen to 3.7percent, seasonally adjusted remained at 3.5percent

Registered unemployment in January 2021 – According to surveys by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), 169,753 unemployed people were registered with the regional employment centers (RAV) at the end of January 2021, 6,208 more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate rose from 3.5% in December 2020 to 3.7% in the reporting month. Compared to the same month last year, unemployment increased by 48,735 people (+ 40.3%).

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 3.5%.

Number of unemployed and Job seekers

Youth unemployment in January 2021

Youth unemployment (15 to 24 year olds) rose by 72 people (+ 0.4%) to 17,766. Compared to the same month last year, this corresponds to an increase of 5,169 people (+ 41.0%).

Unemployed 50-64 years in January 2021

The number of unemployed 50-64 years increased by 1,985 people (+ 4.4%) to 47,515. Compared to the same month last year, this corresponds to an increase of 13,3365 people (+ 39.1%).

Job seekers in January 2021

A total of 261,499 job seekers were registered, 1,181 more than in the previous month. Compared to the same period in the previous year, this number increased by 67,266 people (+ 34.6%).

Reported vacancies in January 2021

On July 1, 2018, the job registration requirement for occupations with an unemployment rate of at least 8% was introduced across Switzerland; a threshold of 5% has now been in effect since January 1, 2020. The number of vacancies reported to the RAV increased by 7,715 to 32,941 positions in January. Of the 32,941 positions, 21,684 positions were subject to mandatory reporting.

Billed short-time work in November 2020

In November 2020, 296,592 people were affected by short-time work, 77,204 more (+ 35.2%) than in the previous month. The number of businesses affected increased by 11,458 units (+ 50.1%) to 34,311. The number of hours lost increased by 6,344,322 (+ 49.5%) to 19,156,622 hours. In the corresponding period of the previous year (November 2019), 221,321 hours lost were registered, which were distributed among 3,650 people in 171 companies.

Levels in November 2020

According to preliminary information from the unemployment insurance funds, the number of people who had exhausted their right to unemployment benefits in the course of November 2020 was 2,195.
