Neuchâtel, 05.12.2017 (FSO) – The hotel sector registered 21.3 million overnight stays in Switzerland during the summer tourist season (from May to October 2017). This represents an increase of 5.9% (+1.2 million overnight stays) compared with the same period a year earlier. With a total of 12.1 million overnight stays, foreign demand rose by 7.3% (+823,000). This represents an increase of 5.9% (+1.2 million overnight stays) compared with the same period a year earlier. With a total of 12.1 million overnight stays, foreign demand rose by 7.3% (+823,000). Domestic visitors registered a 4.0% increase (+356,000) with 9.2 million units. These are the provisional results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
In the tourist summer season, which was characterized by favorable weather conditions, an overnight stay was recorded in all months. The increase was between 3.9 and 9.5 percent. The increase was most pronounced in June at +9.5 percent, followed by October (+7.6 percent), July (+5.3 percent) and September (+5.1 percent).
Strong increase in demand from Asia and AmericaIn the tourist summer season, Swiss guests generated an increase of 356,000 overnight stays (+ 4.0%) compared to the same period of the previous year. The foreign guests provided an additional 823,000 overnight stays (+ 7.3%), with a large portion of Asian and Asian accounts. They accounted for 398 000 additional overnight stays (+ 12.5%). The increase was particularly high among guests from India (+126 000 / + 27.1%), China (excluding Hong Kong, +90 000 / + 11.8%) and the Republic of Korea (+79 000 / +34.9 %). Demand from the Gulf States, on the other hand, was down. With a minus of 43,000 overnight stays (-5.8%), they recorded the largest decline of all countries of origin. |

Demand from the Americas also increased strongly (+216 000 / + 13.5%). With an increase of 154,000 overnight stays (+ 12.7%), the United States generated the clearest absolute growth of all foreign countries of origin.
There was also an increase in demand from Europe (excluding Switzerland) with an increase of 183,000 overnight stays (+ 3.0%). The strongest gains came from Germany (+33 000 / + 1.7%) and Belgium (+29 000 / + 10.3%), followed by Spain (+ 21 000 / + 8.7%) and France, Austria and Russia (respectively +16 000 overnight stays / respectively + 2.6%, + 7.1% and + 11.7%). Guests from Oceania recorded an increase of 28,000 overnight stays (+ 13.3%), those from Africa a decline (-2600 / -1.8%). |

Growth in all tourism regionsAll 13 tourist regions recorded an increase in overnight stays in the tourist summer season compared to the same period of the previous year. Bern Region recorded the largest absolute increase with an increase of 240,000 overnight stays (+ 8.4%). This is followed by the Zurich region (+224 000 / + 7.0%), Valais (+137 000 / + 7.9%), Grisons (+122 000 / + 5.9%) and Ticino (+109 000 / + 6.5%). |
