20 Minutes. In Switzerland, more than a million people moved house in 2015, 12.1% of the population. The figure has never be higher, according to a report called Immo-Monitoring published by Wüest Partner. © Totalpics | Dreamstime.com The home moving covered around 490,000 dwellings. Of those who moved, 344,000 stayed in the same commune (Gemeinde) while the other 659,000 changed municipality. One quarter of the total related to people moving to Switzerland from abroad. Four factors, identified in the report, explain the rise. Firstly, a number of attractive new homes came on to the market. In addition, improvements have been made to transport infrastructure, improving access to a number of locations. Thirdly, an overall increase in the supply of homes has helped. And finally, rents on properties put on the market have fallen, as have the prices of those for sale. And while the frequency of house moves has risen, the reasons remained the same: wanting to start a family or dissatisfaction with current home. Around 15% of renters surveyed were not happy with their dwelling or their property manager. The majority of moves occurred in the cantons of Zurich, Bern and Vaud. Relative to population, the highest rate of house moving was recorded in Geneva (14.3%). The rates were lower in Vaud (12.9%) and Basel (12.8%).

The high rate in Geneva stood in contrast to the low number of dwellings put on the rental market. According to Wüest Partner, this shows that a large portion of those looking for a place to live find a place through their personal network.
