This growth will be accompanied by a marked increase in the number of people of retirement age in all the cantons according to the new population trend scenarios for Switzerland’s cantons calculated by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). Download this press release (pdf, 128 KB) Ageing Coefficient: Percentage of people over 65 compared to 20-64 old, Projection for 2045, by Swiss statistics Ageing effect: Swiss statistics expects that in many central and Southern cantons the number of elderly rises more strongly than in others. Immigration of younger people to bigger towns like Zurich, Geneva, Basel or Bern, prevents such a strong ageing in other cantons. French-speaking cantons will have less ageing issues, reasons might be found in higher fertility and higher immigration. In recent months, net immigration of Germans to Switzerland have become negative. This can have a negative effect to the age structure of German-speaking cantons, for example in central Switzerland.

Summary:
The population increase in Switzerland is far higher than in the euro zone countries and speaks for continuing demand for Swiss francs and a continued CHF strength. Elderly people in Switzerland have far higher pensions and higher purchasing power than people in the euro zone. This implies higher consumption even in older ages.
Higher consumption and stronger GDP growth in Switzerland than in the euro zone countries.
