A survey published this month shows that two thirds of Swiss companies find the administrative burden in Switzerland high or fairly high.
Of the 2,042 companies surveyed in the autumn of 2018, 67.5% considered the burden of Swiss bureaucracy high or fairly high. The same percentage in 2014 was 66%. In addition, more companies felt the burden would rise. In 2018, 67% felt things would get worse, compared to 56% in 2014.
Some of the most time consuming tasks were company accounts and audit, a task consuming an average of 12 hours a month at small and medium sized businesses (SME) and 38 hours per month at large companies, admin related to importing and exporting, a task consuming an average of 10 hours a month at SMEs and 72 hours per month at large companies, dealing with VAT, a task consuming an average of 4 hours a month at SMEs and 18 hours per month at large companies, and admin related to training and apprenticeships, a task consuming an average of 5 hours a month at SMEs and 37 hours per month at large companies.
The averages for these tasks for SMEs totals 31 hours a month. The total cost of bureaucracy at all Swiss SMEs with at least three staff in Switzerland is estimated at CHF 6 billion annually.
When companies were asked for ideas on reducing the burden, the most suggested improvements related to VAT (16%) and requests for statistics (6%). The top recommendations were simpler processes (39%), fewer regulations (16%) and greater digitization (8%).
