Sunrise beats Swisscom on mobile network coverage

After seven years on top, Swisscom has been beaten by Sunrise. The German telecommunications expert and magazine publisher, connect.de and its partner P3, travelled roughly 7,000 km by car around Switzerland testing Swiss mobile networks. Tests were also made while walking and on trains. In most voice tests Sunrise was described as being easily ahead, especially when calling from the car in larger cities. However in rural areas the gap between Sunrise and Swisscom shrank to a couple of points. In walk tests, which were done in Switzerland’s larger cities, Sunrise and Swisscom scored similarly. Despite being behind these two on these tests, Salt still delivered a very good performance said the report. Compared to last year, Sunrise and Swisscom were ahead. By comparison, Salt has remained the same.

By comparison, Salt has remained the same. Swisscom is the only Swiss operator supporting the new Voice over LTE technology. This helped its performance but not enough for it to out do Sunrise on voice performance.

On data performance, what matters when you accessing the web, the ranking was the same. Here Sunrise improved the most compared to last year, particularly when driving in large cities. The performance gap between Sunrise and Swisscom was smaller on walk tests than while driving. As with voice performance the gap shrank to almost zero in small towns and on connecting roads. Again Salt was behind despite delivering a very high level of stability.

In a press release today Salt said it had upgraded or retrofitted more than 450 antenna sites with low frequency bands.
