This work is one of the best introductions to the ideas of Ludwig von Mises. It is based on six lectures he gave in 1959, covering a wide array of economic topics. According to Margit von Mises, who attended the lectures and edited the transcriptions for publication, he “spoke without any restraint about capitalism, socialism, interventionism, communism, fascism, economic policy and the dangers of dictatorship. These young people, who listened to my husband, did not know much about freedom of the market or individual freedom. […] The audience reacted as if a window had been opened and fresh air allowed to breeze through the rooms.”
This book club will be an excellent starting point for students who are new to Austrian economics, serving as a springboard to Mises’s other works, such as Omnipotent Government, Bureaucracy, Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth, Theory and History, and Human Action. Civilization depends on private property, economic freedom, the division of labor, and economic calculation based on market prices. Mises surveys these topics and more in Economic Policy, which makes it a great foundation for new students.
A small group of specially selected undergraduate students will be able to discuss this work with Dr. Karras Lambert in eight weekly virtual meetings, starting on June 4. The meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5-6 p.m. central time, and students will receive complimentary hard copies of the book.
Please apply for a position in the Mises Book Club by Friday, May 3. Decisions will be communicated to all applicants by Friday, May 10.
Important Note: all applicants agree to abide by the Mises Institute's Visiting Scholars Manual.
